It boasts of around 16 tea gardens sprawling over an area of 85 sq km. Carpeted with aromatic tea, coffee and spices, the land of Periyar is a wonderful destination to explore. Tea plantation was first introduced in the beautiful Nilgiri Hills in 1832. Coffee plantation was introduced in India by Ba Abadam, a Muslim saint form the holy city of Mecca. He brought a few coffee seeds and grown then in the Chandragiri Hills in Karnataka, India in the 17th century. Thousands of workers work at these tea and coffee gardens.
