One Of The Greatest Krishna Shrines In India !!

Guruvayur temple is one of the most sacred Hindu pilgrimage centres in Kerala. The temple is dedicated to Lord Krishna and the devotees worship for the child Krishna (Balagopal) as well. The shrine of Lord Krishna is in a standing posture in the  four hands form(Chaturbhuj according to Hindu mythology). It is believed that the old shrine of Lord Krishna was installed here by Guru Brahspati (teacher of gods) & Vayu (god of winds).

Kerala's literature and several traditional art forms are linked with this temple. Here, Shri Krishna is said to be worshiped by Lord Brahma himself. This beautiful temple is a marvelous spot to explore the traditions of Kerala. Beautiful paintings, nakkashi and murals depict episodes from Hindu Puranas the life stages of Shri Krishna in an extraordinary way. Only Hindu people are allowed to enter the temple. It is a major site for marriages as well.

The block, in which the moorat (idol) of lord Krishna is situated, has a square boundary and its roof  assumes a pyramid shape. You can find murals on the walls of this block (Sreekovil) and its roof and doors are gold plated. At the gate of the sreekovil, there are statues of two royal guards. The sreekovil with Krishna's idol is situated in the centre of temple premises, besides you can also find small idols and separate small temples of some other Hindu Gods/Goddesses in the same premises as well. The temple is east facing with two gates- one each on the east and west.
